Ogham ᚁ Beith — Birch. The first letter of the oldest alphabet in Ireland is not named after a word, a god, or a king it is named after a tree. The birch was chosen because it is the first to return after the earth has been stripped bare, pushing through the cold and the emptiness before anything else dares to follow. In the ancient Celtic calendar, birch branches were swept through homes at the start of the new year to drive out what no longer belonged, clearing the ground for what came next. Beith is not simply a letter. It is a principle that every beginning requires the courage to move into the unknown first, before the conditions are right, before the path is clear.
