The alder does not grow where conditions are comfortable — it roots itself at the water's edge, in the soft ground where other trees refuse to stand, and holds the bank against the current. The ancient Celts recognised this and made it the tree of warriors. Alder wood does not rot in water; it hardens beneath the surface, which is why the Celts made their shields from it — a wood that grows stronger under the very pressure designed to break it. In Irish mythology, the alder is associated with Bran, the god whose name means raven, and with the oracular power to see what others cannot. When alder is cut, its white wood turns blood red — a sign the old warriors read not as a wound but as a declaration. Fearn is the third letter of the Ogham alphabet, and it carries the same message it always has: that strength is not the absence of hardship, it is what you become because of it.
